HURON- Riley C. Van Vleck, 3, Huron, Kansas, died Monday, December 8, 2008 at his home. Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Leos Church, Horton, Kansas with Rev. Earl Dekat as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Leos Cemetery, Horton, Kansas. Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 A.M. until time of services on Saturday at the church. The Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, Atchison, Kansas has been entrusted with the final arrangements. Riley was born April 29, 2005 in Topeka, Kansas the son of Carrie Gilbert and Larry Van Vleck. Riley was a fan of the curious George character. Survivors include his mother, Carrie Gilbert, Huron, KS, his father, Larry Van Vleck, Rossville, KS, a sister, McKena Van Vleck, Huron, KS, four brothers, Cody Giles and Chase Van Vleck, both of Huron, KS, Corey Van Vleck and Justin Van Vleck, Rossville, KS, maternal grandparents, Tim Gilbert, Carbondale, KS, Debbie Earl, Topeka, KS, maternal great grandparents, Connie Piper, Robinson, KS, Fred and Mary Gilbert, Horton, KS, and paternal grandparents, Judy and Omer Van Vleck, Rossville, KS and numerous cousins.

The 2008 Gilbert Reunion is now history, we had a good attendance of over 100 people at Lake Shawnee in Topeka, Kansas. If you didn't attend, where were you? Attached to this are some photos of those in attendance, the large group photo is of Agnes Mitchell Jacobia and her kids, grandkids great grandkids etc. The shelter house was packed and with good weather many also ate their lunch outside. Next years reunion will have a large attendance as many who could not attend this year have said they are making plans to attend. More details will be posted on the 2009 Reunion as they become available. The 2009 Reunion will be held in the Community Building in Fairview, Kansas and it will be a celebration of the 150th year the Gilbert family has lived in what we know of today as KANSAS. I am updating and will publish a new GILBERT FAMILY HISTORY in time for next years reunion. I am needing updated information on all people in the family plus more photos for the book. Matthew Allen Runyan

Matthew Allen Runyan is a descendant of Ezekiel and Jane (McGuire) Gilbert through their daughter Margaret Gilbert and Ezra Cleveland. His grandmother Daisy Elieen Coffman Runyan is a granddaughter of Margaret and Ezra.

Matthew Allen Runyan, 20, Silver Lake, died Sat., May 17, 2008, in an automobile accident. He was born on April 22, 1988, in Topeka, the son of Susan M. (Blush) and Robert A. Runyan, Jr. Matt graduated from Silver Lake High School in 2006, and was attending Kansas State Univeristy majoring in athletic training. He was employed by Kansas State Univ. Housing & Dining Dept. as a grounds keeper. He had volunteered at St. Francis Hospital and was a member of National Athletic Trainers Assoc. and Northland Christian Church. Matt loved sports and although he was a K-State student he was an avid KU fan. He participated in basketball, cross country, and track during his high school years and currently holds the pole vault record at Silver Lake High School. Surviving are his parents: Susan M. and Robert A. Runyan, Jr. of the home; a sister: Autumn Marie Runyan of the home; and grandparents: Daisy E. and Robert A. Runyan, Sr. of Topeka, and June M. Blush of Silver Lake. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather: George H. Blush, Sr. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Wed., May 21, 2008, at Northland Christian Church. Burial in Silver Lake Cemetery. Matt will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Tues., at Northland Christian Church, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorial contributions to Northland Christian Church (to be designated for the Eagless Nest Childrens Home in Guatemala, Mexico); 3102 NW Topeka Blvd., Topeka, KS 66617.

Martha Fisher Gilbert

Martha Gilbert (May 31, 1911 - April 30, 2008)
Martha May (Fisher) Gilbert, 96, of Sabetha died April 30, 2008 at the Apostolic Christian Home, where she had been a resident since May of 2007.
She was born on a farm south of Fairview on May 31, 1911 the daughter of Joseph T. Fisher and Hanna Wheeler Fisher. She moved to Sabetha with her family in 1915. She attended Sabetha schools and graduated Valedictorian of her class in May of 1929.
On November 23, 1960 she married John W. Gilbert at the First United Methodist Church in Sabetha; they were married 18 years before John died on November 26, 1978. She was a loving wife and step-mother to John’s four children, Mary Frances, Rosalie Mae, Linda Sue and John David.
Martha was employed 29 years at the Farmers State Bank when she married John and left their employment to become a homemaker and to continue raising John’s two children Linda Sue and John David. She later worked at the Sabetha Community Hospital until she retired in 1980.
Martha was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Sapphire Chapter #348 of the Order of Eastern Star. She served the Sapphire Chapter #348 as Worthy Matron in 1956 and was awarded her fifty year pin in November of 1999.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Julian T. “Jack Fisher; his wife, Ruth and her two sisters, Mildred Fisher and Pauline Fisher.
Surviving include her daughters, Mary Frances Hundley of Sabetha, Rosalie Mae Geneske of Fort Collins, Colorado, Linda Sue Gudenkauf of Topeka; her son, John David Gilbert of Las Vegas, Nevada and 13 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. Family visitation will be Friday evening 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel. The interment will be in the Sabetha Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mary Cotton Public Library or a charity of the donor’s choice sent in care of the funeral home.

FAIRVIEW- Norma Jurgensmeier, 77, of rural Fairview, died April 19, 2008, at a Sabetha Care Home. Survivors include her husband Raymond; four sons Bernard Jurgensmeier and wife Mary of Marion, IL, Gregory Jurgensmeier of Fairview, Kevin Jurgensmeier of Sabetha, Randal Jurgensmeier, also of Fairview; three daughters Pamela Koch and Patricia Bailey, both of Sabetha, Diane Low and husband J.R. of Nortonville; three sisters Lillian Young of Seneca, Grace Houchens of Topeka, Alice Woodson of Eaton IN; ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Augustine Catholic Church at Fidelity, 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 23. A parish rosary will be recited at St. Augustine Church at 7 p.m. Tuesday, followed by family visitation. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Norma Jurgensmeier Memorial Fund which may be sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha 66434. Leonard D. Gilbert, 82, of Wathena, Kan., formerly of Brown County, Kan., died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, shortly after arrival at Heartland East Hospital in St. Joseph.He was born Jan. 29, 1925, in Oneida, Kan., one of seven children of John and Dora Halstead Gilbert. He grew up in the Oneida-Bern area in Kansas and attended schools there prior to graduating at Bern High School with the class of 1943.He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was discharged in 1947, at the rank of Tech 5. He served with the military police in Germany and France during the Nuremberg trials.He returned to northeast Kansas and worked as an automobile mechanic for 25 years for Chrysler-Plymouth dealerships in the area. He later drove a truck for Dallas Corbet of Robinson and Pasco Steel Company of Wathena, Kan. He retired from trucking after his first heart attack and served as a rural mail carrier in Wathena and later Climax Springs. He also did upholstery work.Gilbert was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 217 of Warsaw. He served on the city council at Climax Springs for a couple of terms.He married Pauline Trompeter Nov. 19, 1947. She died in 1997.Survivors include two sons, Daniel Gilbert of Satanta, Kan., and Jerry Gilbert of Hiawatha, Kan.; two daughters, Annette Balogh of St. Joseph and Colleen Koerperich of Hiawatha, Kan.; a brother, Fred Gilbert of Everest, Kan.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.He was also preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jack Gilbert in 20O5; four brothers and a sister.Services are at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, Kan., with Pastor Rich Lehmkuhl officiating. Flag folding will be a courtesy of 2nd BN, 130th FA, Kansas National Guard of Hiawatha. Burial will follow at Powhattan Cemetery.Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, where the family will meet from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leonard Gilbert Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha KS 66434.
