It has been a long search to find a photo of James, who was born 28 December 1849 in Kentucky, coming to the Kansas Territory in about 1859 settling in what is now Brown County. James was married 29 December 1893 at Hiawatha, Kansas to Martha Agnes Kugler. They settled in the Granada, Kansas area where they were farmers. James died 15 March 1915 and was buried in the Granada cemetery. After James died his family moved to Sabetha, Kansas. James and Agnes had 5 children: Nellie Jeanette, Arthur William, Guy Frederick, Arlie L. and Mabel Elizabeth.

Gilbert Reunion 2010

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_5E42ZF5UHmU/TCf84T3z37I/AAAAAAAAAEA/_C8cSCv0gdU/s320/27Jun2010+Gilbert+Reunion+Fairview+a.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5487632715311472562" />
The Gilbert Family gathered today for their annual reunion. The first reunion was 70 years ago in 1940 and has been held each year since then. Today's reunion was in the Community Building in Fairview, Kansas, the area from which the Gilbert family has lived since they moved to Kansas from Kentucky in 1859.
The first reunion held in 1940 was to celebrate Mary Jane (ANDERSON) GILBERT'S 76th birthday. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren all gathered together to help her make the day special. It was such a success they decided to continue the tradition each year. Mary died 17 February 1948, her husband William A. GILBERT had died 16 May 1929. That first reunion was held at Sun Springs near Fairview, which is a local mineral springs resort with swimming, roller skating and camp grounds.
The 2011 Reunion is being planned and will be held at Lake Shawnee in Topeka, Kansas, details will be posted on this website when confirmed.

Matt Hundley Leaving Topeka West for Barton

Hundley leaving West for Barton
Coach attributes opportunity to Cinderella story of season ago
BY RICK PETERSON
Created May 17, 2010 at 6:42pm
Updated May 18, 2010 at 12:07am
Topeka West boys basketball coach Matt Hundley, who led the Chargers to a runner-up finish in the Class 5A state tournament, is leaving West to become a men's assistant coach at Barton Community College, located in Great Bend.
Hundley was 28-60 in four seasons at West, but the Chargers were the Cinderella story of last season, winning nine straight games late in the year before losing to Miege in the 5A championship game. West was 16-9.
The 30-year-old Hundley, who played at Washburn, said even though he has mixed feelings about leaving West, getting the job at Barton, as an assistant to Craig Fletchall, is the realization of his goal to get into college coaching.
"At some point, I knew I was going to have to do this," Hundley said. "I was fortunate enough to be at Topeka West for four years and just had a wonderful time. The administration and the people that I work with and all the players that were part of our program are just unbelievable.
"I wouldn't change that for anything, the experience we've had here. Just having this opportunity with Barton and coach Fletchall being such a great guy, I think this is just an unbelievable opportunity for me that I can't really pass up."
Hundley credited West's banner season for getting him the opportunity to move to the college level.
"Any time you have success, then you're definitely going to get the attention of people, and that's obviously somewhat of what's happened right now," he said. "You hate it for the kids who are still here, because I had such a great time coaching them and being a part of them, but you know at some point, some class down the line, you're going to have to leave.
"This just happens to be the opportunity for me that I can't pass up, and the timing's just right, I guess."
Hundley said he has no problem with being an assistant coach to start his college coaching career.
"My ultimate dream would be to be a head coach in college some day, at any level," Hundley said. "In order to do that, you have to go back to being an assistant. Not very often do you get a chance to go from being a head high school coach to head college coach. It just doesn't happen. So in order for me to do this, I'm going to have to be an assistant coach in college."
West graduated all five starters off its state runner-up team but does return Tegan Michael, Austin Roberts and Aaron Plump, who were valuable reserves last season.
Hundley is the second straight boys coach to leave West to become a junior college assistant. Chad Eshbaugh left the school to become an assistant at Cloud County and was recently named head coach at the school.
Rick Peterson can be reached at (785) 295-1129 or rick.peterson@cjonline.com

Kent Charles MAHAFFEY

Kent MAHAFFEY was married to Pat GILBERT daughter of Dale and Betty GILBERT. Date of photo unknown.

In 1859 Ezekiel and Elizabeth "Jane" (McGuire) Gilbert purchased land in Brown County Kansas and with their young family set roots. Now 150 years later, with family still in the area, as well as all over the country, their descendants will be gathering to celebrate those 150 years with a special family reunion on Sunday, June 21, 2009 at the Fairview Community Building, Fairview, Kansas.

Jane's father James Adgar McGuire (1805-1900) and her brother Hiram had first come to Brown County and were on the special 1857 Kansas Territorial census, and it is assumed that they were here to check out the lay of the land and sent for the Gilbert family. James McGuire returned to Kentucky but Hiram McGuire stayed, married and started a family here, he later moved his family to Missouri then back to Kentucky.

The Gilbert's were living in Owsley County Kentucky before settling 3 miles south of what would become Fidelity and made it their home. Ezekiel died sometime between 1862-1865. When he died Jane said she buried him at the corner of the house so she could keep an eye on him. The house, which was a log cabin, has long disappeared. When Jane died on 30 March 1907, she was buried in the churchyard cemetery in Comet, Kansas, which is located next to the underground telephone facility south of Fairview. Jane, born 01 January 1827, would be considered a pioneer woman, living and providing for her young family without Ezekiel the traditional bread winner. In the 1865 Kansas agricultural census Jane was 38 years old, her 6 children ranged in age from 3 to 14 yrs, and the records show she had 1 horse, 2 milk cows and 4 swine all valued at $150; she had grown and had on hand 120 bushels of Indian corn, 2 bushel Irish potatoes, 100 lbs of butter, 20 gal. of sorgham molasses and a $20 value of slaughtered animals.

When the Gilbert family moved to Kansas the children were, James, William A. Margaret, and Nancy. After settling in their new home Elizabeth and Hiram were born. James (1849-1915)married Agnes Kugler and lived in the Granada area; William (1850-1929) married Mary Jane Anderson and lived south of Fairview; Nancy (1855-1903) married William Brownlee who moved to Lincoln Co, Kansas before ending up in Weld Co. Colorado; Margaret (1857-1911) first married Henry Fortney of Capioma, and after his death Ezra Cleveland living in Lawrence, Kansas at the time of their deaths; Elizabeth (1861-1914) married Chauncy Robb and lived in Comet before moving to Centralia, Kansas; and Hiram (1862-1928) never married and lived his life out on the 36 acres he purchased in 1874 for $1.00 and was buried next to his mother at Comet.

T-shirt design for Gilbert Reunion 2009

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 309px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_5E42ZF5UHmU/SgTCydLG39I/AAAAAAAAAC8/Wc0QCFOv-ZA/s400/GilbertTee-sample.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333602030793973714" />

(click on image to enlarge) This is the t-shirt designed by Greg Brammer for the 2009 Gilbert Reunion. Here are some facts about the 1500's: Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.
Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water...
Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying . It's raining cats and dogs.
There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house... This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.
The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying, Dirt poor.
The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance way. Hence the saying a thresh hold.
(Getting quite an education, aren't you?)
In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme, Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old...
Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, bring home the bacon. They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat...
Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.
Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust.
Lead cups were used to drink ale or whiskey. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake. England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift.) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, saved by the bell or was considered a ..dead ringer... And that's the truth...
Now, whoever said History was boring ! ! !
Educate someone. Share these facts with a friend

Kristina Schuetz and Jacob Dalinghaus

ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED
Jerry and Debra Bailey of Fairview and Stephen Schuetz of Lenexa are proud to announce the engagement of their daughter, Kristina Schuetz, to Jacob Dalinghaus, son of Joe and Marty Dalinghaus of Baileyville.
Kristina is a 2003 graduate of Sabetha High School. So the holiday season is coming up, a good time when all the family is together to take a few photos.
I am also searching for a photo of Hiram Gilbert 1862-1928. Also, if you have old family photos I'd be interested in knowing what you have as I may want to add them to my collection of family photos.
I am also collecting email addresses to send out verifications on information I have for the book, so if you have family members that have an email address I may not have please let me know, I'd rather have duplicate information than no information at all.
For more information or to contact me: Larry Gilbert my email is ks_nature_boy@hotmail.com and my mailing address is 11047 McCall Drive, Oskaloosa, KS 66066
Your help is always appreciated.

History of the Gilbert Family in Kansas

Ezekiel and Elizabeth Jane (McGuire) Gilbert packed up their young family to leave their native Kentucky for the wilds of the Kansas Territory. The time period is from 1857-1859, no proof exists as to when they left nor how long it took them to travel to Kansas. What is known is that they purchased land in what became Brown County on 8 April 1859.

Ezekiel was born approx. 1819 in Madison County Kentucky the son of Aquilla and Jane (Stewart) Gilbert. They could have been here longer, but no proof. So I proposed that the 2009 reunion which would mark the 150th year, be a special family reunion. Our yearly reunion is basically the William and Mary Gilbert descendants, so I am going to attempt to get the descendants of William's brothers and sisters to attend this one, don't know how much luck I will have as they are very hard to get to answer emails and letters.Greg Brammer is working on designs so we can create t-shirts for the occassion, the sale of which to offset the cost of the reunion after they have paid for themselves. From talking to others, the reunion will be held on June 21, 2009 in the new Fairview Community Building.

New website coming soon!

The new Gilbert Family website will be coming real soon.
